While suffering through my latest ailment, I've caught some good shows lately.

My top 3 recommendations:

1. Battles BC - The premiere covered the 2nd Punic War w/ Hannibal's famous crossing of the Alps, fighting Scipio, etc. Very good animation & descriptions of tactics used. A must for you Total War fans.

2. Weapon Masters - kind of like the military version of "Mythbusters". The hosts are funny & engaging. They basically spend an hour taking an odd weapon from history (Chinese crossbow) & re-engineer it from scratch using modern technology to make it better.

3. Tank Overhaul - a group of guys do Jay, Pat & Steve's dream job, taking old junk tanks from history & restoring them to near mint condition, including the engine. The latest episode tonight has them working on an Elephant! * Got me thinking if they finally started work on that dome at Aberdeen?..

honorable mention: the National Geographic channel has been running some excellent shows on the universe.

Saw the Elephant episode on "Tank Overhaul" last night. They did the restoration at Aberdeen & it's there now. It doesn't run, but the outside is beautiful.

I dont remember an Elephant being at Aberdeen, do you guys? Anyways, it's there now- 1 of 2 left in the entire world. Russia has the other one.

I believe the elephant was in the restoration area not on display when we were there.
Of course it could have been over by the Shermans we missed =)

Battles BC is on the History Channel

Tank Overhaul & Weapon Masters is on the Military Channel.

I have these docu. channels:

History Channel
History International
Science Channel
National Geographic
Military Channel

All of them are very good with Nat.Geographic & the Military channel being my favorites.

*Kent, you would love the Military Channel. They have shows 24/7 covering everything under the sun, from weapons old & modern, armor, planes, ships, battles, wars, commanders, doc. on training in the Marines, Seals, Rangers, etc. It's insane. Never gets old. They'll dedicate a whole hour on life aboard a nuclear aircraft carrier for example.

National Geographic is simply awesome. They offer the most variety-bang for your buck. Shows on space, our planet, people, history, you name it. There's probably nothing they haven't covered. It's the way they cover their subjects that make it so entertaining & educational.

Are there other documentary channels out there? (Outside of Michigan)

No mention of Battlestar Galactica?

That's an entirely different thread--or set of threads.

I've been following the current season. Missed part of the show last night and will be working at SxSW next Friday. So, I'll have to record the final or catch it on a rebroadcast.

I sort of figured it was on the Military or H.I. channels. When we switched from our local cable comp. to the Dish network, we lost those two channels because they are in the "Gold" package and we only have the "Silver" package. Also lost the Nat. Geo. Channel as well.

Oh well, ive been watching Battles BC and the new Warriors series on the regular History Channel. Both are good, but i could do without the more modern fighting technics being used by the actors in Battles BC. All in all it isnt a bad show, they obviously are trying to cash in, as it were, on the graphic novel - movie style of "Sin City" & "300".
