Take off & landing length?

Can anyone tell me what was the take off & landing length needed for a Junkers 52 & 88?

Must be some big national secret I can't find it...

Kerry--none of the books I have available provide the answers to your questions. Kent's suggestion is probably the way the go.

If you care which type of Ju 88 for which you want your answer, I would recommend that you specify the version. A Ju 88 bomber could carry as much as a 2,000 kg of bombs if externally loaded. I suspect that it would need a much longer runway that say--the night fighter versions.

I was just needing basic info: 100m, 500m, 1000m, 2000m?

I've read reports of fighters using roads late in the war as runways, but doubt if that was done by the heavier & wider Junkers type.

So far what I have found is that for an Me 262: 900 to 1,000 yards of concrete runway was needed. A grass strip would require 1,100 to 1,400 yards of runway. See:

I contacted Mike Shilton of the Luftwaffe Airfield Re-enactment Group out of the UK by email. Here's their site:

In about 1/2 a day Mike was kind enough to respond with the following information:

"Hello Bill,
from my references I have found that the Ju52 requires a take off run of 350m and the Ju88 the following:-
12.5 ton loaded weight = 570m
13.0 ton loaded weight = 650m
13.75 ton loaded weight - 750m

however if there are buildings in the vicinity of the runways end the take off runs are much longer, i.e for a 20m high building the figures are 1280m,1350m and 1420m respectively.

The runway lengths on airfields in general varied according to wether the landing area was grass or concrete and as to what the designers deemed suitable for the aircraft types likely to be operating from each airfield, HTh, Regards, mike."
