View Full Version : Problems with Unit Portraits in CMAK

The source for the following is Philippe aka "padavine", who is a modder of the CM series. It is from a CMAK mod package that he recently posted a CMMODS:

"The original BTS CMAK German Unit Portraits are actually identical to the BTS CMBB German Unit Portraits. However, some of the portraits in the set are not actually used, since those units don't appear in CMAK. One example of this would be the Volksturm, but there are others.
To make my life simpler I began by copying my own CMBB German Unit Portrait Mod which I used as a base. After all, if you can't plagiarize yourself....
I quickly discovered that there were some oddities in the way the CMAK program uses the CMBB bmp's. Much to my chagrin, it turns out that the bmp slots for early period African theatre German regular infantry are also used by Luftwaffe paratroopers in the Cretan scenarios. What this means in practice is that either your paratroopers in Crete will look like African theatre German infantry (complete with infantry stahlhelms, which looks totally wrong on fallschirmjaegers), or your African theatre regular German infantry will show up with paratrooper portraits (complete with the distinctive fallschirmjaeger rimless helmet).
To make matters worse, middle period paratroopers show up with late period paratrooper portraits (not such a big deal in and of itself), but late period paratroopers show up in African desert garb (as do African theatre paratroopers). You could almost rationalize putting the middle period paratroopers into African-style portraits, but that really doesn't make any sense for the late period paratroopers: Northern Italy doesn't look like North Africa, and desert camouflage in that environment would simply be out of place.
Solution:
The only reasonable solution is another patch, but that apparently isn't going to happen.
So failing that, I've come up with a workaround.
I've made two sets of the groups of images that share their bmp numbers, and stored them in separate folders.
Copy the folder named "The Main Group" into your CMAK bmp folder.
If you're about to play an assault on Crete scenario, break out the paratroop portraits from their separate folder. If you then decide to play a scenario with German infantry in Tunisia (e.g. the original demo scenario), switch back.
Do the same for the paratroopers: if you don't make the switch you'll see paratrooper portraits with the wrong kind of camouflage.
Just make sure you store the extra pairs of folders in a safe place, because you'll have to keep switching back and forth."

Thats alot of switching for something as trivial to most people as unit portraits. Notice i threw in "Most People". Ive read about this Gremlin before.

I have often thought about doing a Unit portrait mod. But i dont want to do a "All inclusive" one. Example, i was thinking of doing a SS portrait mod for CMAK & CMBB and and USA Paratrooper & Ranger mod for CMAK. I got the idea of using the mods from the Panzer Campaigns series of games and combining them with my own Camo backgrounds{you may of noticed i have been using them as Avatars lately} if i could get permission from the original mod maker. I made a bunch of them as test beds but i have yet to figure out what .BMP #'s corrispond to units in question and the years in question ect... Until that happens im in limbo on this project.
