I will be posting short pieces of first hand combat accounts that really show what the fighting was like for the men at the front.
The first is of several I will use from "tragedy of the Faithful". This book is concerned with the history of the III ss PZ Corps, especially the 11th ss Nordland Division. The corps consisted of Western European volunteers who fought only on the Russian front with the Germans in their "crusade in the east". I highly recommend the book.
The first little piece takes place in january 1944 near Lenningrad. The soviets are battering German forces very heavily and the line is beginning to break, making retreat to the next line of defense necessary, where the subsequent fighting around Narwa will become almost legendary.
The 11thSS Panzer Aufklarungs Abteilung (which will gain a tremendous reputation from friend and foe alike), is holding the line on January 26th when the following incident occurs.
