After many months of pestering by Rob, i finally gave in and tried this game. Boy what a gem it is. It takes me straight back to my old days of pushing around cardboard playing Victory Games "Hells Highway".

The first thing that struck me was how beautiful the map graphics were, not unlike a map board/sheets from the old boardgaming days. So many games in this scale IMHO are lacking in this area and i was pleasantly suprised to see that the map was done so well. The second was that the units were done also in the "Counter" fashion from boardgame days. Any veteran of a few games from Avalon Hill or Victory Games will take one look and instantly be familar with their style. Here is a screenie to give you an idea of how it looks -

The game system itself is very cool in that you issue orders to HQ units and they formulate the plan and carry it out. You can break down the division into its seperate regiments and unattach them and operate them as seperate units and reattach them later at your whim. The individual units are company size. An example of an attack is as follows - Lets say i wanted to take a town that has 3 german garrison units defending it. I unattach the 3rd of the 505th regt HQ from the 82 HQ tell it i want it to attack that area, assign the type of formation, how aggresive it will move and react to fire while it moves on that objective, how many casualties it will take before it begins to retreat, the route it will take to the objective and the HQ itself will formulate the plan and run the attack. Whats important to remember is that this game is real time, so that while this battle is going on, other things are going on as well, and there are order delays as well to simulate the fog of war and the delay in issuing the order and the time to get ready and impliment the attack. All very realistic IMHO. Now lets say you take the Objective and you want to lauch a division sized attack on say....a Huge city with lots of VL's. To reattach it you simple highlight the seperated HQ and click the reattach button and the Parent HQ, in this case the 82nd HQ, will reorganize it and situate it were it needs it and sees fit before it launches the attack on the huge city.

Im only touching on the tip of the iceberg on this game, ive only played 4 games so far, but its very cool and i can see myself getting into this game and loving it. About an hour ago i got my first decisive victory, it seems old Monty has recomended me for a knighthood! Here is a screenie -
