Kent the song that you are thinking of is "Roads to Moscow". It was done by Al Stewart and not Harry Chapin. It is my favorite World War II song. It was released in about 1974 and was on his Past, Present and Future album.
I also love "American Patrol" by (Captain) Glenn Miller.

I saw Al Stewart live in Houston around '76. "Roads to Moscow" from "Past, Present, and Future" is still one of my favorite songs. Al's a good guitar player too!
ROADS TO MOSCOW
They crossed over the border the hour before dawn
Moving in lines through the day
Most of our planes were destroyed on the ground where they lay
Waiting for orders we held in the wood - word from the front never came
By evening the sound of the gunfire was miles away
Ah, softly we move through the shadows, slip away through the trees
Crossing their lines in the mists in the fields on our hands and our knees
And all that I ever was able to see
The fire in the air glowing red silhouetting the smoke on the breeze
All summer they drove us back through the Ukraine
Smolyensk and Viyasma soon fell
By autumn we stood with our backs to the town of Orel
Closer and closer to Moscow they come - riding the wind like a bell
General Guderian stands at the crest of the hill
Winter brought with her the rains, oceans of mud filled the roads
Gluing the tracks of their tanks to the ground while the sky filled with snow
And all that I ever was able to see
The fire in the air glowing red silhouetting the snow on the breeze
In the footsteps of Napoleon the shadow figures stagger through the winter
Falling back before the gates of Moscow,
Standing in the wings like an avenger
And far away behind their lines the partisans are stirring in the forest
Coming unexpectedly upon their outposts, growing like a promise
You'll never know, you'll never know
Which way to turn, which way to look, you'll never see us
As we're stealing through the blackness of the night
You'll never know, you'll never hear us
And the evening sings in a voice of amber, the dawn is surely coming
The morning road leads to Stalingrad, and the sky is softly humming
Two broken Tigers on fire in the night flicker their souls to the wind
We wait in the lines for the final approach to begin
It's been almost four years that I've carried a gun
At home it'll almost be spring
The flames of the Tigers are lighting the road to Berlin
Ah, quickly we move through the ruins that bow to the ground
The old men and children they send out to face us, they can't slow us down
And all that I ever was able to see
The eyes of the city are opening now it's the end of the dream
I'm coming home, I'm coming home
Now you can taste it in the wind, the war is over
And I listen to the clicking of the train wheels as we roll across the border
And now they ask me of the time
That I was caught behind their lines and taken prisoner
"They only held me for a day, a lucky break", I say;
They turn and listen closer
I'll never know, I'll never know
Why I was taken from the line and all the others
To board a special train and journey deep into the heart of holy Russia
And it's cold and damp in the transit camp, and the air is still and sullen
And the pale sun of October whispers the snow will soon be coming
And I wonder when I'll be home again and the morning answers
"Never"
And the evening sighs and the steely Russian skies go on forever

Sorry Bill but the REAL song Kent was talking about is :
The Final Countdown by Europe
Cues Music...
We're leaving together
But still it's farewell
And maybe we'll come back
To earth, who can tell
I guess there is no one to blame
We're leaving ground (leaving ground)
Will things ever be the same again
It's the final countdown...
The final countdown
Ooh oh
We're heading for Venus (Venus)
And still we stand tall
Cause maybe they've seen us
And welcome us all (yeah)
With so many light years to go
And things to be found (to be found)
I'm sure that we'll all miss her so
It's the final countdown...
The final countdown
The final countdown (the final countdown)
Ooh ooh oh
(interlude)
The final countdown
Ooh oh
I'ts the final countdown
The final countdown
The final countdown (the final countdown)
Ooh
It's the final countdown
We are leaving together
The final countdown
Metallica - Disposable Heroes ( One of my all-time favorites )

Sorry Andy, Bill is right. Rob, I think "One" is based on the movie "Johnny Get Your Gun." A movie about WWI.

I'm sure that I'm correct because Kent and I talked about "Roads to Moscow" on teamspeak more than a year ago. I even pulled my CD and looked it up for him at that time.

Even if you are not serious Andy, we'll let Kent decide and tell all of us.

"He did a song about a Russian soldier fighting the Germans all through WW2 and then he gets captured and then he escapes and gets sent to Siberia. But for the life of me i cant remember the name of the song." --Schreck.
Hmm, lets see, your song only talks about some vague "final countdown" 13 times in 3 stanzas, while "Roads to Moscow" is about a Russian soldier's experience in the war, and how after it, he is sent to Siberia because he was at one point a prisoner. I think Kent was talking about "Roads to Moscow," not some silly song without a single reference to WWII! Again, lay off the "Trojan" spermicide!

Bill & Mark - You guys are right. I dont know how i got Al Stewart and Harry Chapin mixed up. I guess its the fact that they are both good folk singer/song writers. I guess i can Blame it on the 8th hole in my head.
Mark - You are right about "One", it is about the WW1 movie "Jonny get your gun"
Andy - "Disposable Heros" is a garden variety anti-war song. It has nothing to do with WW2 directly. As for the other song, thats about as funny as the 10,000th time i heard "Did you know Texas was once its own country?".

I forgot to add this little gem to my list:
FINAL COUNTDOWN by Europe
... you can just hear the plaintive guitar riffs being ripped out in the still aftermath of a battle or something... ehh... war-ish.
